I have been thinking of the following poem a LOT lately. It's
one that I memorized during an American Lit class my first
week of college at BYU. I am often reminded of how the little
things that we might seem to hurry through can catch our
attention, and glean our appreciation and a second glance.
Often I find myself staring at Charlotte in amazement at her
silly self. Others don't understand, and probably won't since
they're not the mama. There are times when to cuddle is
the greatest thing in the world, and others when I find
myself repeating the last 2 phrases- like last night as I sat
for the 2nd time in the rocker with a teething Charlotte.
"And miles to go before I sleep."
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening Whose woods these are I think I know,
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here,
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer,
To stop without a farmhouse near,
Between the woods and frozen lake,
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake,
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep,
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

And miles to go before I sleep

I also like Robert Frost. We also had miles to go last night, as we rocked a teething Chick in the rocking chair. Lovely. I found a lullaby for each of my kids, and sang or hummed it while we rocked. I found it soothing. Carmen's is Candle on the Water, and Chick's is Godspeed by the Dixie Chicks (seriously cute song for a little boy).
I have that poem set to music, written many, many years ago by a blind woman who was a friend of the family. It's beautiful - I'll send you a copy.
I just want to say that I love reading your blog. And I absolutely adore poetry -- what a wonderful blog post.
