Note a couple of things here... first of all- this is not a bad thing. (Love you mom). Second- note the verb usage "Becoming" as I still don't have her gifts and skills yet.
I have had a whirlwind- a 175 dollar extra phone bill whirlwind to be precise- over the last month with getting my way. I have had insurance companies (Oh blue cross how you anger me) telling me I have to deliver in the most ghetto hospital, car companies calling left and right (thank you Adam for giving them MY cell phone number), Car insurance, and car loan 30 minute holdings out the wazoo-- and I have suddenly come to the realization.. that I am becoming my mother.
You know those moments when you say something and think.. That's my mom talking. Yep- after a month of appeals, grievances, and phone calls- I can see it happening. Now- again to set the record straight, my mother is not the woman that calls every consumer report hotline to tattle on their imperfections in their products- not at all. My mother is the QUEEN of finesse at getting what she wants.
If EVER you need someone to step in to fix the complaint, upgrade for free, or just get the better deal- she is the GO TO WOMAN, and on my speed dial. She can use the expired coupon, finagle the financial mishap, and make that poor customer service college student freeze like a deer in the headlights. Without ever breaking a sweat, becoming emotional, and keeping her voice calm.
I really didn't think that I had the backbone for that kind of a thing- or maybe it's the stubborn thread (no wait- always knew I had that) until this last month. Wow. It's amazing how well the phrase "that's unacceptable, would you prefer I spoke to your superior about this?" works.
So hats off to you mom- I guess I did get half your genetic makeup.

I'm Becoming My Mother

Sooooo funny. I can provide proof however that the "unemotional, calm voice" only lasts about 5 minutes, and then McDonald mode kicks in….
:)
I hope you give those remarkable genes on to your children, because I am convinced I have none to contribute to the gene pool. I can control a classroom of rowdy teenage boys, bit I have no "voice of authority" for telephone confrontation or negotiation. Perhaps that is why Adam passes on YOUR phone # . . . :-)
